Innovative Health Programs

IHOPE FOUNDATION is focused on programs which bring the community together

Our Mission: IHOPE Foundation is an organization committed to working with underserved communities to improve the quality of life of vulnerable populations through responsive and innovative health programming, service delivery and capacity building in Kenya. Core Values • Service to the underprivileged to bring forth hope and change lives • Accountability and transparency to ensure credibility • Openness to feedback and ideas to ensure we are creative and innovative • Quality, excellence and the continuous improvement of services to deliver high impact and cost effective support for our stakeholders • Stakeholder participation, as community-based solutions are the key to our success

Our Programmes: Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASRH) IHOPE foundation realizes that special attention should be given to young and adolescents sexual reproductive health (SRH) to ensure universal health coverage. Article 43(1) (a) of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 states that: Every person has the right to the highest attainable standard of health, which includes the right to health care services, including reproductive health care. IHOPE Foundation has been in the past years, reached these populations both outside and school going to help address the challenges regarding SRH&R concerns, personal hygiene, addressing the issues of early pregnancies/marriages among the focus population. We have so far reached 4000 boys and girls from schools within Migori and Homa-Bay County. Supported over 1000 girls with sanitary towels to help keep them in schools.

IHOPE SkyMed Program (Telemedicine) Through the use of Collegium Telemedicus App, IHOPE Foundation in partnership with Addis Clinic is connecting volunteer general medicine and specialty care providers in the United States with patients at our partner clinics namely; 1. Sori Lakeside Hospital 2. Chang Medical Clinic 3. LifeScope Medical Centre 4. Jape Medical Centre This approach provides an opportunity for medical staff at IHO stationed at IHOPE Foundation partner clinics to send information about patients to U.S.-based physicians, including vital signs, symptoms, x-rays, and other images. Physicians can then recommend follow up tests, medications, or hospitalization as needed. The platform thrives on limited connectivity, using “store and forward” technology across a low bandwidth. Since the platform allows the clinic in rural and remote areas to communicate with physicians regularly, patients can now receive continuous and consistent care from expert providers. This has culminated to over 80 patients from underserved areas access quality and timely health care services.

Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) Program IHOPE Foundation works with the local schools to sensitize the school children through Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation (PHAST), Child to Child (CTC) and Child Hygiene and Sanitation Training (CHAST) approaches. We also encourage Households to construct latrines and practice handwashing using Community Led Total Sanitation approach (CLTS) At IHOPE Foundation, we believe that schools/institutions provide an ideal opportunity to detect and prevent poor hygiene practice by children. We have worked with 30 local primary and secondary schools in Migori County, reached over 2000 pupils and students through sensitization, education and provision of hand washing facilities which ensures the rights of students to acceptable hygiene practices, available safe drinking water, breaking the silence on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM), advocating for safer places for girls in schools.

Education-IHOPE Fellows Programme: This is a program that is the brain child of our past volunteers-Ms. Renee Bartlett and Ms. Siobhan Brenton both of Canada. The program addresses the challenges faced by young children in their desire to access quality education to earn a decent future and realize their full potential to earn sustainablelivelihood through provision of scholarship to vulnerable children. We assist the students through schooling from primary to colleges/Universities as most of them come from poor backgrounds. IHOPE Fellows program has had 10 beneficiaries since its inception and we look forward to reaching many more. For one to qualify as an IHOPE Fellows, he/she undergoes a strict vetting process to ensure that only the needy ones gets the much needed help. Upon completion of the sponsorship period, they become IHOPE Fellows Alumni. Memorial University of Newfoundland Health Outreach Programme and Education (MUNhope) in Canada and Canadian families have always supported us towards realizing this bid dream. HIV/AIDS Program For over 3 years, IHOPE Foundation has engaged the school going and out of school population with HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns using sports, face to face engagement with the youth in schools and also packaged sensitization sessions targeting the whole population on the dangers of the scourge. Voluntary Counseling (VCT) uptake through referrals to the Youth Friendly Centres and linked health facilities. We have reached about 2000 youths.

Testimonial: Kaela Ellen Walsh: Rural Volunteer Participant

My name is Kaela Walsh. I am a university graduate of a BSc. majoring in biology and minoring in psychology from Memorial University, Newfoundland, Canada. I hope to continue my studies in physiotherapy sometime in the near future. My decision to travel to Migori, Kenya, was influenced by my association with MUNHOPE (Memorial University Health Outreach Promotion & Education), an organization based at Memorial University which is affiliated with IHOPE Foundation. Just a few short months ago I was in Canada not knowing what to expect in Kenya. However, I am very happy to say that my time spent here has been nothing short of amazing. From the friendly people to the rich culture, I have never felt anything but welcomed. Through my volunteer work with IHOPE Foundation, during the past month, I have recognized the dire need for health outreach initiatives in the Migori County. The vast number of people living with HIV/AIDS alone needs immediate attention, not to mention the large number of teenage pregnancies occurring, the usage of contaminated water, the lack of pit latrines, and unsafe mining practices, just to name a few. With the help of the other IHOPE Foundation team members; I was able to begin addressing these pressing issues to provide outreach, promotion, and education about health. I honestly believe that, in providing people with proper knowledge, we have empowered them. Knowledge allows people to take control and responsibility for their actions and lives in general, something that is fundamentally important in being healthy. I have visited persons living with HIV, volunteered at the Migori County Level 4 Hospital, talked to many students about Family Planning, Reproductive Health, and HIV/AIDS, given advice to the motorbikers concerning drugs and alcohol abuse, donated medical supplies to needy dispensaries, and helped construct a semi structure for a person living with HIV/AIDS, among many other things. Through these experiences, I have seen that the people of Migori have the kind hearts needed to help each other reach complete and sustained rural health. Memorial University of Newfoundland, CANADA

Testimonial: Andy Guebert: Unforgettable Experience

“My experience with IHOPE Foundation was overwhelming positive! They are an ethical, community-centered organization that clearly strives to create sustainable initiatives to improve long-term health outcomes. I found the staff overwhelmingly friendly, accommodating, compassionate, and driven. My time volunteering in Migori has influenced my personal career path in rural medicine and I will always be grateful for those who took the time to teach and mentor me in matters of public and global health. I have already returned to Migori since my first volunteer experience, and I know that many of the people I have met will continue to be my life-long friends. Thank you IHope for all that you do!"
